What’s under the surface ready to emerge? A writing exercise.
What’s under the surface of your being ready to emerge?
As we’re starting to feel the whispers of spring, there’s a subtle vibration under the soil as the seeds and bulbs are starting to show their new buds. One thing that I love about living in Wisconsin is that we experience all of the seasons, and the changes outside give inspiration and anchoring for the rhythm and flow of work and life.
Here’s a recent piece that I wrote and a journalling prompt to help you align with the coming of spring.
——
I look outside
The snow is melting, revealing the brown plants and grass
The land looks naked and vulnerable
I feel the vibrations of spring under the surface of the Earth
The seeds are opening ready to emerge
The new baby plants so tender, sweet and new
As they reach for the sun, they ask…
Are we really ready for this?
It’s so cozy here underground
As the plants reawaken, so do the animals
Bear opens his eyes,
Slowly, he stretches and moves
His paws falling to meet the surface of the ground
Bear is hungry and thirsty and wants to see the sun
The rays of light shine through the cracks of his cave
He follows the streams of brightness
His eyes squint and adjust to the daylight shining on his face
Wow, he forgot how glorious it is out here!
Looking across the landscape it’s all so familiar
This land is his home
He remembers
Yet there’s also something about it that’s different that’s new.
There’s energy and excitement that he’s never had before
The anticipation to see what may pop up through the Earth
What flowers will bloom this year?
A yearning for new life
He wanders over and finds his favorite rock.
Oh how he’s missed this big beautiful mineral being under the ancient oak
He sits on it, looks out, and absorbs the landscape with all of his senses
He takes it in
the sounds, the sensations, the smells, the tastes.
Feeling into the oneness
We’re all connected
We are nature
We are the bear, the rocks, and the seeds underground
——
What seeds are opening inside of you waiting to emerge?
What rays of light are calling you out of the cave?
In the anticipation, the yearning, the hunger that comes with spring, what projects, ideas, and new life do you want to cultivate?
I encourage you to take 10-15 minutes to sit with, breathe, and write in response to these questions. Let the thoughts and words flow out of your pen and onto the page even if it may not make sense at first.
